Paper Abstract:      This paper investigates the application of scaffolding question prompts to facilitate students’ modeling activities in a virtual learning environment. The participants were 420 Estonian secondary school students aged 17–18. The students applied the modeling environment “Cell World” in order to study the topic of protein synthesis. The participants were assigned to one of two experimental conditions – experimental group (213 students) and control group (207 students). The experimental group students were prompted to answer a question that appeared on their screens after each modeling operation. The question prompts were meant to engage learners in deeper processing of relevant information presented in the environment. Results of the study indicated that the experimental group students performed better in modeling activities compared with the control group students. Therefore, this study provides evidence that students’ learning efficiency in virtual modeling environments can be improved by implementing appropriate questioning strategies.
